It expresses the very essence of Hinduism as pilgrims, priests, devotes, temples, ashrams, images, inscriptions and cremation ghats intermingle with the rituals of daily life, all sprawled along the banks of the sacred Bagmati River. The temple’s origins are obscure. An inscription here dates from 477 AD, but the shrine may have stood there for 1000 years before that.

Many believe that the Lichavis constructed it while others believe that emperor Asoka had already visited it in the 3rd century. This site has two access points: a long stairway, claimed to have 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which is from the top of the hill to the east; and a car road around the hill from the south leading to the southwest entrance. Mount Kailash is one of the holy mountains in South Asia as it is believed to be the abode of
Hindu Lord Shiva. Mount Kailash can be considered as a center of four religions--Hindus,
Buddhists, Jains and the followers of Bon Pa religion. However, Kailash receives only few
pilgrims every year because of its remote location. For followers of Hindu religion, Mount
Kailash is the place where Lord Shiva resides with his wife and Goddess Parvati along with
other helpers.
Likewise, Tibetans revere Mount Kailash as Kang Rimpoche while the followers of ancient
Bon Pa religion take Kailash to be the soul of Tibet. Similarly, Mount Kailash is Mount
Ashtapada for the followers of Jain religion as they believe their saint Rishabanatha
achieved spiritual liberation at Mount Kailash.
Hindus believe that a single rotation around Mount Kailash will spiritually purify an individual
by wiping off their sins committed in their life. Also, a total of 108 circumambulations of
Mount Kailash will break us free from the never ending cycle of life and death and take us to
the spiritual journey.
A 14-day brief itinerary will take you to the reclusive lands of Mount Kailash when you can
enjoy the mountain and the adjoining nature. Manasarovar Lake is also one of the high
points of Kailash Mansarovar yatra.
